A local food system is a sovereign food system when it produces healthy and culturally appropriate foods through environmentally sound and sustainable methods. A key aspect of the food sovereignty paradigm is the idea that local food systems are the primary means of building dependable access to fruits and vegetables in low food resource communities. Food sovereignty allows for a multi-level approach to transforming local food systems and generally consists of sustainable agriculture practices, land acquisition, participatory community engagement, training programs, nutrition education, and the provision of financial support.49-52
